1 in 5 women experience depression or anxiety during or after pregnancy

Maternal Mental Health

During pregnancy and in your postpartum period, your hormones are going haywire. A large majority of moms feel a little all over the place. Anxiety, depression, mood swings that leave your head spinning. This is pretty normal in the first two weeks; you've probably heard of the "Baby Blues." Sometimes, though, it's a little more than we can handle. Here are some resources and places you can go for support:

You Are Not Alone

1 in 5 women in the United States feel some sort of anxiety or depression during or after their pregnancy. Because of body and hormonal changes, this can be normal and may go away after a few weeks. If you feel sad, or angry, or nervous and it does not go away--don't be scared! Find someone you can talk to about how you are feeling and find people to help you.

You are not alone!

Help Others!

Maternal Mental Health Patient Safety Bundle
About 300 babies are born each year in Del Norte County! This means that at least 150 new mothers may be suffering from Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD) every year! You know these women. You see them everyday. You may even be one of them and recognize that smile and nod in other moms--the one that says everything's okay when inside you're desperate and wondering why you hurt so much if you're somehow broken.

Our mothers and babies need love and care! Women in our community deserve spaces to voice their fears, cry it out, and get support from one another. Social support is known to protect mothers from PMAD and bring healing to mothers experiencing PMAD. If you love mothers and babies and you are passionate about their well-being, please consider starting a peer support group. You could be the one to bring hope into a mom's life.
